Air temperatures just below freezing, wind chills near zero. Not a particularly hospitable morning when I captured this scene a couple of weeks ago. However, it was absolutely gorgeous and I relished standing there and watching the sun rise over the frozen lake. Average temperatures here are starting to warm up and that ice will gradually begin receding. In another month or so it should be relatively ice-free and then it becomes a haven for a wide variety of birds.
Just another gorgeous Colorado sunrise
No, it wasn’t blazing orange like many of the sunrises we get here but I found it no less beautiful. The pastel colors on the horizon giving way to the deep blues of the still dim sky above had a subtle elegance unto itself. Taken this past Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Denver, Colorado.
Golden Great Plains sunrise
One of the first few pictures I took this new year. While waiting for the golden rays to illuminate any nearby critters, I stopped and soaked in the gorgeous scene unfolding to my east. As the sun crested the hill, it lit of the grasses and mullein plants making for a pretty scene right at the first dawn of 2017.
Clouds allow a close look at the sun as it rises
Kind of a cool scene that unfolded yesterday morning in Adams County, Colorado. Low clouds were on the horizon as the sunrise began but they were not very thick allowing you to look right at it and the sun almost looked like a full moon.
Sunrise of orange and blue
I figured those colors were a good omen for tonight’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. 😉
My son and I were up and at ’em before the sun this morning as usual and ended up at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. There, on the shores of Lake Ladora, we watched a beautiful sunrise unfold. Here in #Colorado we almost take these scenes for granted as more often than not, our days begin and end with this kind of beauty. Go Broncos!
Golden sunrise, golden leaves
This is one from a month ago that I kept forgetting to share. Taken early one morning at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. The sunrise was absolutely gorgeous – as they oftentimes are on the Great Plains – and the golden light illuminated the fall colors of a roadside cottonwood tree. It all made for a very pretty scene.
Sunburst on the Great Plains
It’s a new workweek and what better way to start it then with a beautiful image of dawn. Many of the leaves of this tree had already been claimed by the change of seasons but there were a few still holding on strong.
Aided by the golden light from the rising sun, the leaves seemed to glow. That same light lit up the wild grasses and illuminated the horizon in oranges and yellows. Up above, the gorgeous blue skies that Colorado is famous for. By using a small lens aperture (f/16), the ‘star burst’ effect is created.
Have a great week!
Wide panorama of a glorious sunrise on the Great Plains
It was an absolutely beautiful morning northeast of Denver. My primary goal had been to get pictures of the setting supermoon but it was so warm that distortion from the heat yielded less than stellar pictures. Thankfully, in the opposite direction, Mother Nature was putting on an amazing show.
This is a series of seven images stitched together covering about 170 degrees. Click the image for a larger view and a better look at it. It was truly amazing and demonstrates why I always say that some folks may find this flat land boring but I find it awesome.
Pre-dawn light colors Colorado’s Rocky Mountains
It was an absolutely beautiful morning on the Great Plains today with unseasonably warm temperatures and calm conditions. Looking toward the sunrise the view was ‘just okay’ but not overly impressive. However, turning west toward our mountains it was beautiful. The rising sun colored the mountains and clouds in shades of red. There was a monstrous wave cloud above , the snow-capped peaks below and fall colors in the foreground.
An orange and blue sunrise in honor of the Denver Broncos
The World Champions take on the Carolina Panthers tonight in a rematch of Super Bowl 50. All of Broncos Country will be cheering on our team tonight hoping for a similar outcome.
This particular image was taken back on March 5 at Jackson Lake State Park, Colorado and is one of my favorite landscapes. The stunning colors of the sunrise, calm waters with the reflection and the crescent moon above made for a breathtaking scene.
