Taken Sunday morning out near Denver International Airport. The rising sun lit up the clouds in shades of red and orange with the always beautiful, blue Colorado sky in the background. On ground level, the flowers in this field were starting to get their first taste of the morning warmth and their edges lit up by the increasing light.
A high altitude sunrise
The view as you drive the road up Colorado’s 14,265 foot high Mount Evans is impressive any time of day. At dawn it is especially so though as the eastern sky is oftentimes lit up in a myriad of colors, as it was on one morning last month.
Sunrise at Swiftcurrent Falls
While the family slept in (I have to allow that every now and then to keep the peace – haha), I headed off solo to scout out the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park, Montana. This area is not visited near as often as some of the other, more popular areas in the park but it can certainly hold its own in terms of beauty. Wildlife was scarce but the sunrise and scenery were amazing.
I had been focused on the west, watching the rising sun illuminate some of the mountains near Swiftcurrent Lake. While that scene was indeed beautiful, turning around found an even better view. The sun was rising and illuminating the creek, waterfall and landscape in its golden light.
I snapped a few pictures, including this one, then put the camera down and just stood there, soaking in the sun’s rays, the sounds of the rushing water and appreciating the stunning scene before me. It was just kind of one of those ‘moments’ in your life that you just can’t help but remember for a very, very long time.
Old Glory at sunrise
I may be old fashioned but when I see our nation’s colors flying, I can’t help but get a patriotic feeling. I think back to the places that flag has been, the things it has seen, the hope it brings to people across the world and of course the men and women who have sworn their allegiance to it and served under it.
Throw in a typically gorgeous Colorado sunrise and have that flag flying at Fort Logan National Cemetery and your heart skips a beat. My dad is interred there, as are thousands of others, and while each visit is special, moments like this one this past Saturday make it just a bit more special and poignant.
Dawn’s early light shines brilliantly
I was just heading out the door for my usual weekend photo drive last weekend when I noticed the sunrise that was quickly unfolding. Time was short though and I was worried I was going to miss the moment as things were evolving quickly.
I rushed to the nearest open space and managed a few quick pictures just as the sun was coming over the horizon. A brilliant ‘star burst’ coupled with the orange horizon and deep blue skies above made for a very pleasing scene.
Taken in Adams County, Colorado.
The sun rises, and so has He
“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'”
Luke 24:6-7
Golden orb rises about the horizon
As I’m driving to my photo target for the day Saturday, I was running a bit behind due to my need to stop and get more coffee. It was cold and I needed warmth and caffeine. 😉
As I got back in my truck with 10 miles to go to my destination the glow of the rising sun was beginning to appear and I was worried I wasn’t going to make it in time to capture what was clearly going to be a gorgeous sunrise.
I might have broke a speed limit or two along the way but I made it with only seconds to spare, jumping out of my truck and snapping pictures as soon as my feet hit the ground. I captured a number of good images of the event but decided I liked this one the best. Taken in Morgan County, Colorado.
Brilliant sunrise lights up the sky, lake’s surface
Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets happen more often than not on the plains of Colorado. Unfortunately I am not usually in a spot that allows me to get a good view of them but on this day last Sunday I certainly was. The peace and quiet of the early morning provided a great opportunity for thought, reflection and of course picture taking. Taken at Jackson Lake State Park, Colorado.
A late winter sunrise on the Great Plains
I headed northeast of Denver to a spot in Morgan County that I have been dozens of times during the summer but never in the winter. It would appear that no matter the season, Colorado’s plains have the most amazing starts and ends to the day. It was a chilly 24 degrees when I snapped this image but I am really liking it. The colors, the reflection and the crescent moon came together quite nicely.
Sunrise starburst illuminates the resting place of heroes
Before making our first stop on our photo excursion today, my daughter and I stopped to visit my dad and a few thousand other heroes. Hard to believe it has been five years. Miss him so much still.
