Scrolling through pics this evening and came across this one that I haven’t shared. I love the look of this gorgeous young raptor with the glint in its eye as it flew over a pond picking out its next meal. Taken February 7, 2015 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Hey! Look at me!
A Double-crested Cormorant appears to be showing off for one of its roost-mates. In actuality it had just landed after going fishing and was spreading its wings to dry itself off.
Juvenile heron and egret have a disagreement
With the heat of summer settling in, my after work photo excursions have been limited as the wildlife hides from the hot temperatures. Today, instead, I spent my lunch hour at Denver City Park with these beautiful birds.
In this sequence, a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron doesn’t want to share its spot of the pond with a similarly young Snowy Egret. Mama Egret swoops in though and sets the young ones straight. It was a lot of fun to watch.
Peek-a-boo!
I’m not entirely sure why folks have a hard time finding Burrowing Owls. 😉 Here, a pair of owlets does a pretty darned good job of staying out of sight of the shutterbug. Taken in Adams County, Colorado.
Soft eyes for such a massive animal
A bull moose grazes on willows in Colorado’s Arapaho National Forest in July 2014. I am sitting here contemplating where I may head for a picture taking excursion this weekend. Lots of choices but I find myself favoring a return visit to this spot.
Posing Pelican
With its wings slightly raised to help cool itself in the warm morning sun, an American White Pelican keeps close watch for its breakfast. This very handsome bird was part of a larger pod of 10 or so pelicans that were patrolling the waters of Jackson Lake State Park, Colorado.
During the summer you can find these large birds on many of the bodies of water in northeastern Colorado.
Damselfly enjoys a day on the water
Oftentimes confused for dragonflies, damselflies are actually a different species. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica. The cool thing about them is that they actually prey on other insects making meals out of flies and mosquitoes.
Friday funny: There’s one in every family
😉 This Burrowing Owl owlet north of Denver International Airport was quite the character. While its siblings pretty much ignored me, it was very interested in the guy with the camera. Feel free to share and bring a smile to someone else’s face. Have a great weekend!
Bald Eagle ready to launch
Keeping close watch on its prospective prey, a Bald Eagle readies itself for a dive toward its unsuspecting victim. Down below, a prairie dog was blissfully grazing in a field, totally unaware of the fate that was about to befall it.
In a stunning scene that lasted less than five seconds after this picture was taken, the eagle leapt into the air and plummeted to the ground. With its talons extended in front, it snatched the rodent, too to the air again and headed off to enjoy its well-earned meal.
Taken at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado.
Big-eyed Great Horned Owl
This great looking guy wasn’t quite sure what to make of the goof with the camera. He would go from looks of indifference, to sleeping to this “who the heck are you!” look. Very entertaining to watch and those eyes, as always, are amazing.
Image taken in Thornton, Colorado.
