I spent the weekend in the Colorado mountains but found little of interest in the way of wildlife other than this little guy. I think he was expecting a handout so was more than willing to stay low in the tree and let me take pictures.
Bald eagle soars with the clouds
Another shot of the bald eagle I took so many pictures of last week. On the last day of my vacation in northeastern Colorado, this majestic bird gave me a picture perfect flyby, as if to bid me farewell.
American White Pelican flyover
Another shot from the Colorado plains from last week. This very large bird provided a great subject, especially with the clear, blue skies. These birds are one of the biggest in North America with wingspans that can reach up to 10 feet across and lengths approaching 6 feet. They can appear a bit gangly and awkward but are in fact beautiful fliers. You can read more about them here: http://bit.ly/1nHibTT
Bald eagle soars above the water
Taken this past week at a lake in northeastern Colorado. Pretty unusual to see eagles here this time of year so I was ecstatic to be able to take pictures of this one across multiple days last week.
What’s over there?
A curious coyote pup keeps a close watch on the photographer. 😉 Taken Sunday, June 22, 2014 in Thornton, Colorado.
Coyote pups in the morning sun
Taken in an open space area in Thornton, Colorado. These curious pups were watching mama – who was in turn very closely watching me. 😉
Gull in flight
A nice looking gull flies overhead. Normally these birds are viewed with disdain for the noise and mess they make. Nevertheless, they are pretty when in flight.
Taking the family for a walk
While camping on the Colorado plains last week we got to enjoy multiple visits from a turkey family. Mama and her eight little ones would walk through a couple of times a day. She wasn’t too pretty but her kids were kind of cute. 😉
Western Kingbird in flight
Little birds are hard to catch in flight as they move so darned fast. Strong winds one day last week had this guy struggling and slowed him down enough to let me get a picture.
The Western Kingbird is common across much of the western United States in the summer. These colorful little birds can be quite aggressive and are known to even chase after raptors. I actually have a pretty cool sequence from last week of one chasing a bald eagle I will share later.
Prepare for takeoff
A bald eagle prepares for launch in eastern Colorado this morning. It is unusual for bald eagles to stay in Colorado during the summer so I was absolutely ecstatic to find some around a lake we frequent. Needless to say, I delayed family water sports whenever I saw one of them and could snap pics. 😉
